“Kate Beckinsale may star in ‘Total Recall’ remake”
What in the holey hell is this? I am understandably upset. There are a laundry list of reasons to be upset about this. But today I will deal with only one. My very first thought upon reading the words, “…’Total Recall’ remake,” were: “WTF? They can’t remake that already it only came out…” and then my eyes flashed to the words: ‘the 1990 version.’
21 years ago.
The nineties were actually a long time ago. It’s weird. This was over 2 decades ago. You know what that means? it means I’m old goddamnit. Seriously. Currently, I’m the age my dad was in 1980/81. And in 1981, the 60s were a LONG time ago. Well, for a 6 year old they were. They were still a long time ago when I was 15, in 1990. The 60s weren’t retro yet, but they were almost an arcane era for us in the early nineties. when people talked about the 60s in the 80s and 90s, they talked about it with nostalgia, like a bygone time when the world was much different that it is now.
We’d look at black and white photos of people in the 50s and 60s, and be glad that we grew up in a civilized age. A time when there was color for god’s sake. And now I’m sitting here looking back at 1990 the way my dad must have looked back at 1960. Its weird. Really weird to be this old. And my kids are not going to believe me when I tell them what it was like in the 80s and 90s before they were born. My daughter won’t even believe what it was like in the early to mid 00s. In 10 years when I start to tell her what it was like when daddy was a kid, shell be amazed that the human race lasted this long. My son loves 80s movies though. So for him its not that big of a deal yet. I haven’t got too deep into the ‘when i was your age’ pitch yet, (ok, a little bit) but when I do, its gonna blow his mind.
Not sure what my point is exactly. Except that when they are remaking a movie that you think of as ‘recent’ only to realize that it was a long-damned-time-ago, you’re starting to get old. Oh yeah, you have a long way still to go on this Earth thing. But the generational gaps are getting bigger and bigger. Remaking ‘Total Recall’ just seems bizarre to me. It would be like remaking ‘Back to the Future’ (25 years ago), Or Austin Powers. I dunno. just weird.
I’ll leave you with this bit from XKCD to get you through your day (assuming your 35 or under…haha)
