Tonight’s ‘Creative Output’ is in the form of a couple of remixes on my own work, and some scans that I did today.
I was going back through 2 of the sketch books that I’ve been keeping this year and scanning the pics in. You will notice that earlier versions which appear on the ‘Meat are crappy photos taken with my phone and then emailed to myself. I’ve never been happy with the way some of this stuff comes out, so it’s nice to be able to go back and get higher res. versions and clearer pictures of what I’ve been doing. On some of these I will provide a little commentary, in case some one hasn’t been following along.
Also, please provide suggestions or criticisms (note also that these are mostly just sketches, and don’t count *as* much as they would had I actually spent significant time on them)… one thing I want to know is: Would You Want This on a T-Shirt? or a hat…
or a mug..
or a scarf..
or a busted statue???
[As Always, Click For Enlargered… or ‘To Embiggen’ as Wil Wheaton is fond of saying – I also encourage anyone to wade through the massive collection of uploads where all of my digitized art currently lives here on tah intrawebs…]
Part one, 12 year old paintings.
Detail from a slight remix of a painting I did way back in ’99. I believe it is acrylic on canvas, i used a LOT of black and white, simply because thats what my style was at the time. Everything i did back and white, or red and black or… haha, who am i kidding? I still love those combinations! Anyway, if you want to see a nice digital representation of the actual and full painting, click the thumbnail below.
Join me again after the jump.
Detail from a larger painting from the same period, late ’90s…. A lot of people think this was a self portrait, and I just don’t see it. At least not as a literal self portrait. Although i was going through some stuff at the time, getting over my teen-angst and all that. In some ways its kind of soothing to sit and stare at this piece, because it seems like it is both calm and vexing at the same time. But you think “Hm… This guy is balancing the forces of whatever here! There’s nothing he can’t do!”
THIS, is my masterpiece. I seriously consider this to be one of the best things I’ve ever done, and definitely the most awesome thing I did in the late ’90s. I thought and dreamed about this painting for over a year before I even started sketching the canvas. Before I even BOUGHT the canvas. This was the reason I started painting around that time. This is the ‘Constellation!’
As many people know, one of my favorite bands has always been They Might Be Giants. And this is my homage to The Constellation from the album Apollo 18. Kind of hard to see from the pictures, but the actual constellations in the painting were done with a clear acrylic paint, so you don’t immediately see them, only in certain light or angles.
Basically it’s a song about leaving your home, and returning, and finding your mind, and yourself… on the railroad tracks as it were. Like most of TMBG’s songs it doesn’t make a lot of literal sense, but it’s pretty awesome none the less.
I found my mind on the ground below
I was looking down, it was looking back
I was in the sky all dressed in black
See the constellation ride across the sky
No cigar, no lady on his arm
Just a guy made of dots and lines…
Part 2: This year…
Giant Sketch Pad
I bought this *huge* sketchbook a while ago because I wanted to do some forced perspective drawings. Still haven’t done those. and its kind of hard to hold a floppy 12×18 pad on you’re lap while watching TV…. sometimes. But, I’ve managed to use up a few pages. here are a few details from my first day back to drawing after my illness and unfortunately induced coma:
Besides the new ‘not-a-walker’ mechanism I’m working on now, thats about the only decent page so far. Most of the stuff you’ve already seen on the blog came from my much-small-sketch-book:
ladies and gentlemen…
Black and White!!
The story behind this was that I’d been home one day watching Hulu and started queuing up Simpson’s episodes. You can read my wright up of what occurred HERE. Afterwards, I really got into drawing robots made of circles and lines..
The ‘Robot’s Balloons’ that I posted originally was of course a picture taken with my phone in bad light. The scan more than makes up for it.
I will leave you with some random images, some culled from the last few months of Doodle of the Day and Art-To-Be, check the Categories/Departments and Tags for more. Also, DON’T forget to comment either here or on FB, or Picasa, should you happen to accidentally click the link to my Mas ART Album. I keep thinking that no one reads this, so let me know what you think (if anyone actually DOES read this, thank you!!).
